Fieldstone looks so natural as a veneer, and can also be used for landscaping!
Picture
BEFORE
Scalloped pieces were used to divide the the sidewalk and landscaping.

AFTER
A fresh new pop of color on Fieldstone brought this space into 2020!

We can create any color of Fieldstone you need to best compliment your style. We have a wide range of large to tiny pieces that we can also customize for you. For this project, only 15 linear ft of stone was needed so the customer opted for smaller pieces so it wouldn't be too overpowering. Let's bring your dream project to life!

Jersey Mike's remodel

before

There were a few places near the far right corner that had come apart from the main structure. This natural stone looked great, but it was in need of a face lift!

Picture
We completely removed the stone from the right corner and the center section between the doors. We reinforced the structure and added felt and lath to adhere to the new stone.

We created a custom color that mimics the original style. The structure is now stronger than before and looks great, if I do say so myself! We can create custom colors and complete your project turnkey!

DIY Stone Backsplash

6/11/2020

I decided to get creative one Saturday afternoon! With the help of my sister, I installed stone on the backsplash in my kitchen! #WomenBuildStrong

Picture
What a "fun" puzzle!
We chose Zion Stone's East TN Ledgestone style (with a few pieces of Fieldstone sprinkled in) and the Smokie color to best accent the dark storm colored cabinets. We prepped the surface with a scratch coat of ThinSet, and laid out our stone before placing it on the wall.
PictureWe used a trowel to spread the ThinSet, but ended up just using our hands (with gloves) to get it into the harder to reach areas.

From prep to clean up it took us about 6 hours to complete the project! Some masons might laugh at that timing, but hey, we enjoyed ourselves by blasting music and having fun finding pieces that fit together and looked best! The thing that took the most time overall was mixing the ThinSet. We used almost an entire bag and mixed it in small increments as we needed. We could have mixed the entire bag from the get go and added water as needed, but ya live and ya learn!
Picture
This is by far the most dramatic before and after of this project! The above photo is when my house was purchased. The kitchen was in need of a major update! We chose dark cabinets and installed a concrete countertop with a black acid stain finish. The Smokie stone color has the perfect tones to bring everything together!

Picture
The left side photos show my attempt at using peel and stick wallpaper as a backsplash that wasn't the yucky paint and odd lines that were on the wall from rearranging the cabinets. The stone really made a HUGE difference in the overall feel of the kitchen. Yup, I even made the monogrammed stove cover myself!

If my younger sister and I can lay stone, you can too! It may take you a little longer than an experienced mason, but please know that you are more than CAPABLE! The feeling of seeing your own work in your own home is so rewarding! To my fellow DIYers, I am happy to help walk you through the process when you start your next dream project!

Materials needed to lay stone

3/17/2020

Cue Montell Jordan's classic hit "This Is How We Do It."
Ok my fellow DIYers! Let's do this! Here is a list of materials you will need to best install your stone from Zion Stone.

INTERIOR

STEP 1: We do not recommend our manufactured stone veneer (MSV) to be placed directly onto dry wall/ sheet rock. MSV needs a solid, strong foundation.
If you want stone to be where dry wall currently is, you can...
1. Remove the dry wall and replace it with DUROCK (0.5") or concrete board.
2. Remove the dry wall and replace it with plywood and lath.
3. Build out the wall with 2x4's, then cover with either duroc or plywood/lath.
STEP 2: Stone must adhere to the wall with mortar. We recommend Type S mortar (also requires sand), or ThinSet (Floor Tile, around $6 per bag from Lowe's; each bag can cover around 40-50 square feet).

STEP 3: You may also need these materials:
- Nails to apply duroc and plywood. (Our masons may use screws with a drill, or nails with their nails gun.)
- Nails to drill in lath to plywood. (Our masons typically use 1 1/4" or 1 3/4" galvanized coiled nails with their nail gun.)

Exterior

Picture
Example of stone > mortar > lath > felt

The same rules apply for exterior. Stone cannot go directly onto vinyl, metal, etc. Stone can be applied directly to block, stucco or brick that is unpainted. Painted block, stucco or brick will require lath. We also generally apply a roll of 30 lb. felt under the lath for extra water protection.

Thinset Mortar

Need mortar to be brown, darker gray, or maybe even red? We have dry pigments that you can mix in to change the color of your mortar!

Please note that these are generally accepted methods and details for the installation of our manufactured stone veneer. This is intended as a guide and not intended for any specific project. There is no expressed or implied warranty or guarantee of the techniques, methods or materials identified. It is understood that there are alternative methods that might be required and/or recommended based on the specific project and/or mason/contractor recommendations.

Charming chimneys

11/13/2019

One of the best ways to accent the exterior of your home is to add stone to the chimney! These robust structures really help set your home apart from the neighbors!
Picture
This is one of my favorite chimneys to date because of the color! This client chose Summitt: Sahara which really encompasses that warm and cozy
"cabin feel" they wanted on their actual cabin!
Picture
I absolutely love this gorgeous home and "mock chimney"! This was one of our first projects and I couldn't be happier with East TN Ledgestone: Tuscany being on this house! It tied all the other beautiful siding colors in perfectly!
Picture
Shadowledge: Smokehouse was the ideal color scheme for this deep brown wood and black roofed cabin. The scenic look from atop the Smoky Mountains brightens the home and is very picturesque.

Let us help you treasure your home with a charming chimney from Zion Stone!

So you want to lay your own stone: Questions to ask yourself before diving in

10/22/2019

Ok, fellow DIYers: are you ready to lay your own stone? Pinterest makes DIY projects look easy breezy, but sometimes a project requires a little more work than originally anticipated! Here are some helpful questions to ask yourself before you dive in.
Picture
Fortunately my 5 pound Executive Assistant had
some prior experience!

why are you wanting to do this project?

1. MONEY: According to Remodeling's Cost vs. Value Study (link), manufactured stone veneer (MSV) has consistently remained in the top 3 highest return on investment of home remodeling projects, returning over 97% of its cost. MSV is typically half the price of "real" stone, and a lot easier to handle. You could save a lot of money upfront and in the long run by choosing MSV.
2. BEAUTY: Yes, we CAN make our homes look like those Pinterest houses! So why choose stone to do the Pinterest-worthy trick? Stone adds texture and natural color in places that would otherwise be dulled by standard construction materials, like dry wall. It brings the roots of our earth into your home and simply looks stunning.
3. TIMELESS: Shiplap is beautiful, but it is a trend (yes I just said that!). Stone has been in the foundations of earth for centuries and will never fade away. Depending on your color choice, stone truly is timeless.

Are you ready to invest your time & energy?

The first time I laid 5 square feet of stone, it took me about 3 hours. Masons reading that line will laugh! But it takes time to properly construct the foundation your stone is going on, prepare and gather the right materials, and lay out your design. It does get much easier as you go along, but it will take time and energy up front. Plus, it is a messy process! We actually have an Installation Guide available 24/7 on our site, and can recommend various YouTube videos!

Will you be happy once it's complete?

Your small fireplace could take you 2 hours, or 2 weeks, depending in your pace. There is no race and no competition for your unique project. We have a 30 year warranty on the color of our stone, so it is meant to last for generations. Once stone binds with mortar, it's extremely difficult (though not impossible) to remove from the original surface. At the end of the day, no matter how long it takes you or how many times you want to change out the color and style, will you be happy once it's complete?

Ready? let's do this!

I want to understand why I am doing something before I do it, and want to know the true impact of what that thing will have on my daily life. I hope these questions have helped shed some light on the reality of this DIY project. Whether you are ready to start laying your fireplace this second, or you want to wait a little bit longer, please know that you CAN do this! Even roses take time to bloom! We are always here to help so please feel free to contact us any time!
